Work Shops For Kākano Children

On Thursday children planned a lesson to teach the younger children.  They had to choose something they were passionate about and map out how they were going to go about teaching the concept with a warm up activity, beginning, middle and end.

The Kākano Children then had the opportunity to choose a workshop that interested them. There were many different choices for example, Samoan and Tongan language, Te Reo Māori,  soccer skills, how to play four square, making puppets to represent characters in a book, using Stop Motion, spelling and so on.

After the workshops Koru 2 had to reflect on what went well, not well and what they would change next time.

Learning Te Reo Māori

This term we have all been trying our best to use more te reo māori in class (teachers included!). Each week, Miss Mack will introduce us to one or two new words/phrases.
Using te reo is encouraged and celebrated by teachers and students. When we use te reo in class or at school, we are rewarded by being given dojo points. We have two secret Māori leaders who are listening out for children that use te reo at school. These children are then recorded in a document with a tally next to their name. At the end of the week the points are shared and children are celebrated.

Take a look at some of the words and phrases we are already using.

Our Coding Learning Journey Term 3

Our Coding Learning Journey
Provocation
  • In partners, we found different objects around the classroom. We had to close our eyes, while our partners directed us towards the object by tapping a code on our backs.
  • Next we tried using Bee-Bot and Tynker Programming Applications. We programmed directions, actions and to get rid of any bugs in the programme. Then we discussed what is coding and what the possible purposes were for it were.

What is coding?
  • We discovered that computer programming, also known as coding, is the process of creating software.

Why Are We Learning to Code?
  • We found out that coding empowers us to do many things we wouldn't otherwise be able to do. These things include hand-crafting our own websites, becoming a career coder or even starting a technology business.

  • After this we learnt about the different motion blocks and other important functions. We also developed a bank of coding vocabulary. Next we explored Scratch Junior before designing a programme for the junior children.

Our design brief
  • Design a programme using Scratch Junior that will help teach our junior children about our school values.

The process

  • We got into collaborative groups and discussed the Key Competencies we would have to develop and use while taking part in this process. (Managing Self, Participating and Contributing, Relating to others)
  • We began to develop a storyboard to plan the sequence of events that our programme would have.

  • We leant what the different blocks did.
  • We developed our understanding of coding vocabulary.

Gratitude

Koru 2 And The Science Of Character

As part of Character Day we have been looking closely at our own character strengths. Many of our character strengths are in line with the New Zealand Curriculum Key Competencies and our school values.

Over the weeks we have studied ourselves very closely. Here are some of the questions aimed at provoking our thinking in this area. We also learnt some new language for example the difference between appreciation and gratitude.
Our Thought Provoking Questions

  • I am grateful for..... (gratitude or appreciation)
  • What did you do in the past year that you're most proud of?
  • What is optimism?

We viewed different digital media and this got us thinking.

  • What character strengths are shown here?
  • What could this person do to develop these further?
  • 30,000 Days- We are only on this Earth for approximately 30,000 days. The film talks about our unique special sauce: the character strengths that make  us.

From here we created a slideshow about our own character strengths. These can also can be viewed in  our Google Slide accounts.

Where to from here? Our next steps

What is one thing we can do this week to develop our character strengths?

What is one way we have used this strength  in the past month?
How can we help other children develop their strengths?

The Science of Character

Gratitude and Appreciation
It has become clear that there are a number of advantages associated with being grateful. Grateful people are happier, have stronger feelings of social support, and feel less stressed and depressed. Evidence suggests an increase in people’s levels of gratitude may be a good way to increase their feelings of well-being. Koru 2 reflected on things that make them grateful.
