Our Bodies- Interest Projects

NATURE OF THE PROJECT

Have looked into hauora and mental well-being. Making links to our physical bodies (systems, parts, exercise, processes).

ENGLISH ACHIEVEMENT OBJECTIVE
Integrate sources of information processes and strategies with developing confidence to identify form and express ideas

SCIENCE ACIEVEMENT OBJECTIVE
Recognise that there are life processes common to all living things and that these occur in different ways

HEALTH ACIEVEMENT OBJECTIVE
Identify factors that affect personal physical social and emotional growth and develop skills to manage changes

First children were asked what is an interest project.

Our responses to ‘What is an Interest Project?’
Here area few of our ideas:

Choose a topic - gather information - make a project - Miyah

Project of interest - Riley

Pick something to work on and make it interesting - Shania

Getting good facts - Jaelen & Oli

Get facts about a theme. Pull out important parts. All earning together. Doing it together. Team effort. - Jordis

Topic - info - make a project - Maia

THIS WAS A GUIDED INQUIRY

Next the teachers took childen through the inquiry process and then children got into groups that they thought they could work well with. We discussed in detail the Key Competencies and how these would look, sound and feel in action within the group. Children then observed a couple of documentaries around the human body. This was the provocation to help motivate interest.

In there groups children discussed and brainstormed  topics of interest. All children were brought to the mat to discuss and elaborate on their ideas. We talked about the importance of coming to a consensus with in the group and some of the skills needed to do this.

Once children decided on a topic to explore they had to come up with the big idea, driving questions, resources needed and how they would document their learning.

Children had to decide how they were going to present this information to class.

Finally once the presentation was over children provided feedback, the group that presented had to evaluate and reflect on the process as well as the teacher providing feedback in the form of a comment.

Above
Evaluate - Reflection/Questions
Has this had the desired impact on our children?
Is there a greater awareness of the impact of litter in our environment?
Did children feel empowered in what they were doing?
Engagement was high
A number of activities helped to keep children focused and on task
Greater cohesion between members of the hapu as they now know each other
Older children were supporting and guiding the young children
Giving children the ‘role’ of enviro superheroes helped to empower them towards our common goal of cleaning our local park and school.

Next step
Possibly a greater focus on the in and outs of recycling. Why can some things be recycled and others can’t?

Also, more of a futuristic approach. If we keep on doing what we are doing what might the world look like in fifty years?

Work Shops For Kākano Children

On Thursday children planned a lesson to teach the younger children.  They had to choose something they were passionate about and map out how they were going to go about teaching the concept with a warm up activity, beginning, middle and end.

The Kākano Children then had the opportunity to choose a workshop that interested them. There were many different choices for example, Samoan and Tongan language, Te Reo Māori,  soccer skills, how to play four square, making puppets to represent characters in a book, using Stop Motion, spelling and so on.

After the workshops Koru 2 had to reflect on what went well, not well and what they would change next time.

Learning Te Reo Māori

This term we have all been trying our best to use more te reo māori in class (teachers included!). Each week, Miss Mack will introduce us to one or two new words/phrases.
Using te reo is encouraged and celebrated by teachers and students. When we use te reo in class or at school, we are rewarded by being given dojo points. We have two secret Māori leaders who are listening out for children that use te reo at school. These children are then recorded in a document with a tally next to their name. At the end of the week the points are shared and children are celebrated.

Take a look at some of the words and phrases we are already using.

Moon Landing Ranking Sheet

NASA Exercise: Survival on the Moon

Statistical investigation
·     Conduct investigations using the statistical enquiry cycle:
gathering, sorting, and displaying multivariate category and whole number data
identifying patterns and trends in context
     communicating findings, using data displays.

Scenario:

You are a member of a space crew originally scheduled to rendezvous with a
mother ship on the lighted surface of the moon. However, due to mechanical
difficulties, your ship was forced to land at a spot some 200 miles from the
rendezvous point. During reentry and landing, much of the equipment aboard
was damaged and, since survival depends on reaching the mother ship, the
most critical items available must be chosen for the 200-mile trip. Below are
listed the 15 items left intact and undamaged after landing. Your task is to
rank order them in terms of their importance for your crew in allowing them
to reach the rendezvous point. Place the number 1 by the most important item,
the number 2 by the second most important, and so on through number 15 for
the least important.

My space ship crashed into the moon and I had to grab 15 items. 1 being the most important to 15 being the least. Then I had to find the difference between my rankings and the the NASA scientist.

Moon Landing Ranking Chart- Salvaged Items

First of all my partner and I ranked from 1-15 what we thought was the most important items to grab from the spacecraft. Then we had to find the difference between our ratings.
Next we compared our ranking to a NASA scientist to our own. The least difference was tank of oxygen and the map  and the most difference was the pistol, milk and compass.  Then we had to graph our results.

What I enjoyed about this activity was.......

It was fun and cool  and it was a good activity

What I didn't enjoy about this activity was..........

Having to type the names of the objects

What I learnt during this activity was.............

That graphs are cool and a lot of fun. Interesting as well. I wonder why the Nasa scientists like the compass so much.

We have been working on graphs and i have been working with my buddy to do this. We have to see who  was the closest to the Nasa’s  score. We have to do this by doing our score first then our buddy's score then Nasa score. Finding the difference and closest.

First of all my partner and I ranked from 1-15 what we thought was the most important items to grab from the spacecraft. Then we had to find the difference between our ratings.  The least difference was the rope, boxes of matches and flares  and the most difference was nylon rope and parachute. We then had to graph our results an interpret them.

Next we compared our ranking to a NASA scientist to our own. The least difference was the oxagen, matches and water  and the most difference was portable heating unit. Then we had to graph our results.

What I enjoyed about this activity was
Working with my buddy was good because we could help each other
What I didn't enjoy about this activity was.
Nothing it was fun and new.
What I learnt during this activity was.
How to use the graph making app. It’s really easy. How to read the results.

What I enjoyed about this activity was.......
I could  work with a friend and through this  learn more about maths

What I didn't enjoy about this activity was..........
Being distracted

What I learnt during this activity was............
I thought a box of matches and flares would be great. For heat and to get help.

Next we compared our ranking to a NASA scientist to our own. The least difference was oxagen and heating unit and the most difference was food concentrate. Food concentrate sounds yuck. Then we had to graph our results.

What I enjoyed about this activity was......
Doing the bar graph was cool

What I didn't enjoy about this activity was..........
Doing things on the ipad because ogf the small keys.

What I learnt during this activity was.............
How to use the  graph maker.

What I enjoyed about this activity was
Adding the numbers the numbers to get the difference.

What I didn't enjoy about this activity was
Getting stuck. I should have asked straight away for help.

What I learnt during this activity was
Doing  the maths and seeing the result. Aslo it was interesting why don’t they want a box of matches. Can’t you use these on the moon?

This is the difference between me (Chloe) and Holden.  The closest ranking were signal flares, first aid kit, magnetic compass and solar panal. The graetest difference between my partner and the pistol and the map. I wonder what the difference will be between each of our rankings and Nasas.
